Sam,
did you know that some of the "ancients" and probably all of the "new-agers" consider the pineal gland to be the physical location of the Third Eye and there are actual exercises to open it (yes, i've done them ;-), and increase one's ability to intuit all that is "unknowable about reality." Descartes was very cool. i imagine even more so through the faint fog of Lite Beer...

having suffered through, and even penned, more than my share of academic philosophical papers that engage in leaving us "bereft of a metaphor for inner life" as you aptly note, I am intrigued by this book through your review. And where does quantum physics and extra dimensions and 11 parallel universes fit in here? that kind of modern science seems to almost invite speculations of magical inner life and extra-sensory adventures into the "cleavage between what we think and what we feel"...?

though it sounds as though this book would unintentionally keep me more on the left breast of the "cleavage" than on my preferred spot on right breast side...its enticing enough just to be in there with all that...fullness....
maybe if i ever finally finish Eight White Nights, I will pick this one up!

Thanks as always for a thoroughly enjoyable and perceptive review...
