Dzanc Books Big Summer Sale

Amazonfail be damned—it’s far from the only game in town. Today while the big guy was twisting in the wind, I was busy getting my instant literary gratification over at Dzanc Books, where they’re having a terrific sale: two books for $17, three for $25, or four for $32, and no shipping charges. With a catalog like theirs you can’t really go wrong, plus they’re one of the good guys. And their non-ageist list of 20 Writers to Watch is a lot more exciting than the New Yorker‘s. You’re going to see at least a couple of their titles featured here in the not-too-distant future, so c’mon—get hip! I’ve already started calling one of my cats “Shoeshine.”

Dzanc is cool with me if for no other reason than being the publishers of Roy Kesey, a comrade of mine from the old (like, first generation) version of the Zoetrope All-Story site, which was one part literary forum, one part member-judged writing contest, and one part intellectual steel cage death match. But I am a Small Press junkie. Take Keyhole Press, for example, who publishes Blake Butler (on Dzanc’s 20 to Watch list), and whose Submission Guidelines include this unusual bit of instruction: “Please send a video of yourself reading in public. Audio is not OK. Text samples are not OK. Video only. And, please, no videos of yourself reading in your house. Go out and get a reading gig. If you think that’s not possible, then you aren’t right for Keyhole. We’re not just looking for good books. We’re looking for good performers…we’re looking for writers that are willing to work.”
