Ink Link

Because here at Like Fire we deeply care for printed matter, because we love paper stock and boards and dustjackets and bindings and hot type, we also believe that it’s a matter of due attentiveness to respect the ink. From The Printing Ink Company in Vaughan, Ontario, here’s a weirdly delicious video about how ink is made to whet your appetite.

Very soothing to watch and very interesting to think about.

I once toured a small offset printing operation; this video takes it a step back to production of the ink. I’d also like to see a video, even further back, about the production of the pigments – the mysterious essences of color. Where do they come from?

Watching those rollers roll together over and over to smooth together the particles and the liquid is almost like getting a massage, feeling the tension slowly ebb out of my shoulders. (I’ll stop now.)
