Review of The Sisters Brothers at the Ploughshares Blog

Anyone who’s not regularly reading the book reviews over at the Ploughshares Blog needs to fix that right away. They feature short, snappy looks at work that falls slightly outside the mainstream, for the most part, and is all worth taking note of. I say “for the most part” because Patrick DeWitt’s The Sisters Brothers, among my favorite novels of this year, has just been announced as one of the six nominees on the Man Booker Prize shortlist.

Fortunately it’s still not too fabulous for Ploughshares, and my review is here.

It is also on the Giller (a Canadian literary prize) longlist.

I really enjoyed this book. Usually, award winning novels are chosen because they challenge the reader (but they aren’t very fun to read). This book received so much attention because it’s compelling and intelligent.
