I”m not quite sure where to leave my posts, Rohan. I’m figuring you’ll pick them up wherever, right? I just wanted to add another mystery writer–Elly Griffiths–who has a female sleuth, an archaeologist named Ruth Galloway. Griffiths endeared herself to me by writing about a single, slightly overweight woman who feels frumpy–and who (in “The Janus Stone”) discovers she is pregnant. (I won’t reveal who or why here.) I’ve just ordered the newest in this series–only three so far–”The House At Sea’s End”–in which I’ll find out how Ruth is handling single parenthood and academic career. (I have a personal interest in this topic, now, thank heavens, in the past.)

The Ruth Galloway novels are rather short and not always as surprising as I’d like, but I think you’d like her descriptions of the bleak but beautiful Norfolk landscape–and you’ll approve of Ruth’s stubborn character. Anyway, I do.

Have you written somewhere about e-books, Rohan? If so, don’t repeat yourself, just guide me to your essay. I have not been able to bring myself to abandon the “real” book yet, despite urging from many book-loving friends, and so of course I tote or mail books whenever I travel–not so much travel these days, but I did ship a carton out to La Jolla for my winter here. On the other hand, I discovered a fabulous used-book section in the local library, with new and recent hardcovers, plus some classics, selling for $1 to $4, so I could have just used that. How do you feel about e-books? Have you learned to love them?
