Creature Report

It’s good for your body to sleep, even though
it’s all going by so painfully fast. I’m in
my burrow alone thinking of you, wondering
what to say to all the folks back home. “Hello,”
I’d say, gesturing toward the gulch, “this
isn’t what I’m supposed to remember.” I’m
a huncher, studious and lacking. All morning
I perform checking behaviors in my dream,
making dishes from dried leaves pulled from
the car door. Nostalgia as poison and balm,
that would be my subtitle if I had one
film on my resume that could help you understand.
