Open Letters invites submissions for a wide variety of writing on the arts, from staple subjects such as books, movies, and music to fields as specialized and diverse as medicine, cooking, or video games. See our mission statement on the masthead page to get a sense of our aesthetic aims. Our publishing criteria have little to do with subject matter and everything to do with the quality of the writing. We like crafted work that is both rigorously researched and accessible to any thoughtful reader—work that treats the understanding of art as a universal pursuit, and as a universal pleasure.
Open Letters considers poetry submitted in the months of May and October only. In order to submit, please email an MS Word document or PDF containing no more than 3 poems (a maximum of six pages of poetry) to openlettersmonthly [at] gmail.com. Include your name and the words “Poetry Submission” in the subject line of your email. We aim to respond to submissions within six weeks of the close of each reading period. If you have not received a decision on your submission after that time, please feel free to inquire. If you are interested in reviewing poetry for Open Letters Monthly, please contact us at the above email address.
Send all other submissions or queries to openlettersmonthly [at] gmail.com. Give us a sense of what you’re proposing in the subject line of the email. We’ll try to get back to you as soon as we can.
Terms of publication: Upon acceptance, you grant Open Letters one month exclusive rights from the date of publication as well as anthology rights. You retain copyright ownership of your work and can publish it anytime after that month; we would be grateful, however, for acknowledgement if the piece is published elsewhere. Your piece will be featured in the main section of the website until the next issue comes out. At that time, your work will be placed in the archives where it can be accessed by readers.
