Open Letters invites submissions for a wide variety of writing on the arts. See our mission statement on the masthead page to get a sense of our aesthetic aims. Our publishing criteria have little to do with subject matter and everything to do with the quality of the writing. We like crafted work that is both rigorously researched and accessible to any thoughtful reader—work that treats the understanding of art as a universal pursuit, and as a universal pleasure. The best way to judge if your idea is a good fit for us is to read recent issues of Open Letters Monthly.
Open Letters considers poetry submitted in the months of May and October only. In order to submit, please email an MS Word document or PDF containing no more than 3 poems (a maximum of six pages of poetry) to openlettersmonthly [at] gmail.com. Be sure to include your name and the words “Poetry Submission” in the subject line of your email. Please include your name and email address in the word document or PDF as well. Do not place your poems in the body of the email. We aim to respond to submissions within six weeks of the close of each reading period. If you have not received a decision on your submission after that time, please feel free to inquire. If you are interested in reviewing poetry for Open Letters Monthly, please contact us at the above email address.
Send all other submissions or queries to openlettersmonthly [at] gmail.com. Give us a clear sense of what you’re proposing in the subject line of the email; your message should offer a specific pitch for a review or essay. Please also give us a bit of information about yourself, including your writing experience, and a few short clips from relevant previous publications. (If you’re a blogger, excerpts from blog posts will do fine.) We’ll get back to you as soon as we can. Please note: Open Letters does not accept previously published material.
Terms of publication: Upon acceptance, you grant Open Letters one month exclusive rights from the date of publication as well as anthology rights. You retain copyright ownership of your work and can publish it anytime after that month; we would be grateful, however, for acknowledgement if the piece is published elsewhere. Your piece will be featured in the main section of the website until the next issue comes out. At that time, your work will be placed in the archives where it can be accessed by readers.
Publishers: please send any and all books, recordings, catalogs, and announcements to our Managing Editor, Steve Donoghue. Writers & Artists: we’ll be happy to consider chapbooks, self-published stuff, and any curiosities you’d like to share. Please include a note about what you’re sending and how to get in touch with you. Our address is:
